RECURRING TERMS IN NEWSPAPER THIS MONTH
1. Non-Banking Financial Company (NBFC)
A Non-Banking Financial Company (NBFC) is a company registered under the Companies Act, 1956 engaged in the business of loans and advances, acquisition of shares/stocks/bonds/debentures/securities issued by Government or local authority or other marketable securities of a like nature, leasing, hirepurchase, insurance business, chit business but does not include any institution whose principal business is that of agriculture activity, industrial activity, purchase or sale of any goods (other than securities) or providing any services and sale/purchase/construction of immovable property. A non-banking institution which is a company and has principal business of receiving deposits under any scheme or arrangement in one lump sum or in installments by way of
contributions or in any other manner, is also a non-banking financial company (Residuary non-banking company).
2. NBFCs are doing functions similar to banks. What is difference between banks &
NBFCs ? NBFCs lend and make investments and hence their activities are akin to that of banks; however there are a few differences as given below
i. NBFC cannot accept demand deposits;
ii. NBFCs do not form part of the payment and settlement system and cannot issue
cheques drawn on itself;
iii. deposit insurance facility of Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation
is not available to depositors of NBFCs, unlike in case of banks.
3. Can all NBFCs accept deposits ?
All NBFCs are not entitled to accept public deposits. Only those NBFCs to which the Bank had given a specific authorisation are allowed to accept/hold public deposits.
DEMAT ACCOUNT DeMat is nothing but a dematerialized account. If one has to save money or make cheque payments, then he/she needs to open a bank account. Similarly, one needs to open a DeMat account if he/she wants to buy or sell stocks. Thus, DeMat account is similar to a bank account wherein the actual money is being replaced by shares. In order to open a DeMat account, one needs to approach the Depository Participants [DPs]. In India, a DeMat account is a type of banking account that dematerializes paper-based physical stock shares. The DeMat account is used to avoid holding of physical shares the shares are bought as well as sold through a stock broker. Economic Survey 2014-15 highlights
Indias economy will grow at a rate of more than 8 per cent in the 2015-16 fiscal year, while consumer inflation will drop to between 5 and 5.5 per cent, according to the Economic Survey report, which was tabled at Parliament by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, a day before Prime Minister Narendra Modi governments first full Union Budget.

UNION BUDGET HIGHLIGHTS 2015-16
States to be equal partners in economic growth; move to making India cashless society; social sector programmes to continue. Some of the challenges mentioned by the Finance Minister Arun Jaitley are poor agricultural income, decline in manufacturing ; and the need for fiscal discipline. Here are sector-wise highlights TAXATION
• Abolition of Wealth Tax.
• Additional 2% surcharge for the super rich with income of over Rs. 1 crore.
• Rate of corporate tax to be reduced to 25% over next four years.
• No change in tax slabs.
• Total exemption of up to Rs. 4,44,200 can be achieved.
• 100% exemption for contribution to Swachch Bharat, apart from CSR.
• Service tax increased to14 per cent.
AGRICULTURE
• Rs. 25,000 crore for Rural Infrastructure Development Bank.
• Rs. 5,300 crore to support Micro Irrigation Programme.
• Farmers credit - target of 8.5 lakh crore.
INFRASTRUCTURE
• Rs. 70,000 crores to Infrastructure sector.
• Tax-free bonds for projects in rail road and irrigation
• PPP model for infrastructure development to be revitalised and govt. to bear majority of the risk.
• Atal Innovation Mission to be established to draw on expertise of entrepreneurs, and researchers to foster scientific innovations; allocation of Rs. 150 crore.
• Govt. proposes to set up 5 ultra mega power projects, each of 4000MW.

• AIIMS in Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Himachal Pradesh, Bihar and Assam.

• Allocation of Rs. 2,46,726 crore; an increase of 9.87 per cent over last year.

• Sovereign Gold Bond, as an alternative to purchasing metal gold.

FINANCIAL SECTOR
• Forward Markets Commission to be merged with the Securities and Exchange Board of India
• NBFCs registered with the RBI and having asset size of Rs 500 crore and above to be considered as financial institution under Sarfaesi Act, 2002, enabling them to fund SME and mid-corporate businesses
• Permanent Establishment norms to be modified to that mere presence of offshore fund managers in the country does not lead to "adverse tax consequences."
